This was also true for the first animated films—artists had to draw hundreds of pictures where each frame showed a slight change. When these pictures were shown quickly one after another, it looked like the characters were actually moving!
Imagine you want to draw a cat jumping. You would need to draw one frame where the cat starts to lift its paw. The next frame would show the paw a little higher… then even higher… and so on until the cat is fully in the air. How long do you think it would take to draw every single movement?
