Farming: you reap what you sow!

In ancient times, people were hunter-gatherers and would go into nature to find food. But this changed around 10,000 years ago when they began not only gathering plants from forests and meadows but also sowing seeds and growing their own food. This marked the beginning of farming!

Where did it begin?

The first centers of agriculture were places like Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq) and Egypt, where people learned to grow wheat, barley, and other crops near rivers.

Domestication of animals

Farmers began domesticating and raising animals themselves. Sheep and cattle helped people feed themselves, stay warm with clothing, and work the fields.

Tools and Methods

As farms expanded, tools like the plow—for turning the soil—and irrigation systems—for watering plants—were invented.

From Villages to Cities

As farms grew larger and became more profitable and successful, villages expanded into towns and cities, and civilizations developed more rapidly.

Farming is more than just a way to grow food! By learning about the history of agriculture, we can understand how people changed their way of life and thrived by working together with nature.
